I have always loved interior design, and adore looking at people's houses. During high school I had a thing for designing houses. I would sit at the kitchen table with my ruler and a trusty HB pencil and create floorplans of my 'dream home'. Mum kindly built a house when I was about 17, which thrust my designing activities into super-turbo-charged-overdrive.

So you can imagine how giddy with excitement I was when in 2010 I began writing for real estate. My passion for houses is now indulged every single week. Yes, nowadays my working week is dominated by real estate projects. And. I. Love. It!

What happened to blogging in 2011?

Okay, so it is fair to say that blogging was not my top priority in 2011. There - I've said it. To many people, my lack of blogging is criminal, unthinkable, and inexcusable. But for me it was, well... inevitable. Why? Because my humble little business, The Letterbug, took off! Yes, I was tip-tapping away on my computer keys like a crazy woman throughout 2011. It was fabulous!

Whilst I probably should have found time for blogging, I just didn't.

And I blame paragraph breaks. And I blame Blogger. Something happened to Blogger which made it almost impossible for me to publish anything. I would compose a post, add images, and have everything looking pretty. With glee I would then go ahead and click 'Publish', only to find that ALL formatting had vanished, and all I was left with was one solid, nasty, block of text. I would then, of course, curse and swifly remove the post and return it to 'draft' status.

Anyone who has a blog will know just how time consuming blogging can be. And anyone who has a computer knows just how frustrating computers can be. There was a good chance that I would have launched my laptop into outer space if I wasted yet another evening trying to iron out this formatting issue. So instead I just stopped blogging. For almost a whole year.

Wow!

Recently I have found so many inspiring blogs, and have really enjoyed rediscovering the blogisphere. So here I am. I'm still bewildered by how to get the paragraph breaks how I want them in Blogger, but a bit of Googling and a few html codes seem to have me up and running again.

Please be patient with my weirdo spacing, if and when it occurs. Just know that I am doing my darnedest to get it right!

Here's to issue-free blogging in 2012 - hooray!

Word of the Day #2 - Amnesia

It sounds so much more serious than forgetfulness, and I have chosen 'Amnesia' as Word of the Day #2 for a good reason.

A little while ago, I met somebody who said they'd been looking at The Letterbug's blog. When I say "a little while ago", what I actually mean is AGES ago - Lordy have I been neglecting the Letterbug's blog!

Anyway, this valued client of mine said he had enjoyed reading about Word of the Day #1 - Ubiquitous.

"Really?" said his companion, who turned to me and said,
"What does ubiquitous mean?"

Long silence, crickets chirping, a dog barks somewhere in the distance...

I couldn't remember! Gah!!!!

There's nothing like being put on the spot to make me go completely, tragically, and gut-wrenchingly blank. Let's just say it was one of the lower points of my day - and for now I choose to blame amnesia, hahaha!

Word of the Day #2:

Amnesia [am·ne·sia] n. Partial or total loss of memory, usually resulting from shock, psychological disturbance, brain injury, or illness.

Note: In my case, the shock and psychological disturbance came after the amnesia.

Let's never mention this incident again, okay?

Word of the Day #1 - Ubiquitous

Welcome to The Letterbug's Word of the Day! There are some words in the English language that are nifty, or interesting, or weird, or just fun to have rolling from your tongue. Whichever category they fall into, I thought it would be fun to share a few of these words with you.

I won't be so brazen as to suggest that I will be posting a new word every day - it would just never happen. However, when the planets align and I find a spare 5 minutes in my day, I promise to devote them to finding you a 'Word of the Day'. Okay?

So here we go...

Word of the Day #1:

Ubiquitous [u·biq·ui·tous] adj. Being or seeming to be everywhere, or in all places, at the same time; omnipresent.

This word just looks so handsome, and could do with being used a whole lot more often. See if you can casually throw it into a sentence or two today - I dare you!

EG: "Mosquitos have become an ubiquitous presence on Grammar's porch just after sunset this year. Alas!"

BUG BITS - Forcefield Electronic Security

I love newspaper clippings. If any of my family or friends happen to make it into a newspaper or magazine I feel compelled to take the clipping and keep it. Old fashioned? Perhaps. But for me it's like trying not to close your eyes when you sneeze - near on impossible to control.

You can imagine then, how excited I was to write an editorial piece for Garth Heywood of Forcefield Electronic Security. Just before Christmas he had a 300 word slot in his local paper, the Blue Mountains Gazette. Here's what we wrote:

Wow! What a whirlwind end to 2010. It was more than a relief to take some time to relax and enjoy family and friends over the Christmas period. Santa left some wonderul gifts for us under the tree, and we have been working overtime to eat up all of the leftover ham.

And now it is time to look ahead to the sparkling new year ahead. I can't wait to get stuck into my first round of Letterbug projects, commencing Monday 1oth January.

Whenever it is that you decide to leap back into 'business as usual' for 2011, consider the copywriting you undertook last year.

Did the task of producing a monthly newsletter feel like a constant weight around your neck?
Did your press releases fail to get the results you were hoping for?
Was blogging a never-ending item on your to-do list?
Did your business writing simply take up too much of your valuable time?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, perhaps it is time to consider getting more help.

Perhaps you could do with a little bit more Letterbug in your life!

BUG BITS - Cake Face

If there's one thing I love almost as much as chocolate, it is cake. It is my lighter, more spongy best friend. So you'll understand when I tell you that I was more than a bit excited when the delightful Mignon from Cake Face came my way a little while ago.

Mignon wanted to spread the word about Cake Face, and showcase her flair for bespoke wedding and special occasion cakes. In short, Mignon needed a media kit.

Is it just me or do high school English classes slide further and further away with every year? Thank goodness we have "Grammar on the Porch". Good old Grammar loves to visit The Letterbug from time to time for a nice cup of tea and a natter about the English language. She knows you know - really she does. But just in case...

Good morning dears! Grammar is so pleased you've joined us here on the porch this morning. Don't you just love the scent of freesias hanging in the air on such a sunny spring morning? It reminds me of a high tea I once attended at a manor house as a young lass. My my, spring fever was in the air that day... but that's a story for another day, he he he.

Today let's chat about the past. I hope by now that Grammar has passed on some valuable tips to you here on the porch. Over the past year or so we've nattered about there, their and they're, sipped earl grey over that vs which, me vs I, its vs it's and many more grammatical conundrums. Well, here's another beauty for you to consider...

Past vs Passed

Which past/passed is which? How do we use them? What time is morning tea?? Sorry dears, ignore that last question! Let Grammar shed some light on these two words for you:

Past - the word 'past' locates something in time or space. It can be an adjective, a noun, an adverb or a preposition. Following is an explanation and examples of each.

Past – adjective: gone by or elapsed in time
- It was a bad time, but it's all past now.
- the past glories of the boot-scooting craze.
- during the past year.
- three past presidents of the bowls club.

Past – noun: the time gone by
- Grandpa could remember events far back in the past.
- our bowls club's glorious past.
- Sometimes it's better to forget the past.
- That tattoo is a reminder of the past.
- When he left prison, he put his past behind him.

Past – adverb: so as to pass by or beyond
- The parade marched past.

Past – preposition: beyond in time; later than; after
- It's past midnight; nearly half past twelve!
- The pub is just past the petrol station.
- We went past your house by mistake.
- Grammar is past the maximum age for sky-diving.

Passed - is the past participle of the verb 'to pass'.
- To proceed, move forward, depart; to cause to do this. This can refer to movement forwards in time, in space, or in life (such as 'to pass an examination').
- The car passed us at extremely high speed
- I passed all of my exams
- He passed the basketball with an effortless flick of his wrist.
- The time passed so slowly while you were away.

Now then Grammar hopes that this will help to clarify the different uses of the words past and passed. Speaking of which, it is high time you passed the Tim Tams over to Grammar - all of this chit chat has made me hungry. Who would have thought, eh?!

BUG BITS - Lumina Motion Pictures

The Letterbug loves weddings, so while we're on a roll with wedding projects let me tell you about the project that made me cry. Often. I cried a lot while this project was on the go.

Richelle and Shane Kerr from Lumina Motion Pictures create the most beautiful wedding day films that I have ever clapped eyes on. These are not your average daggy wedding day videos, people! These are film-clips, motion pictures - beautiful, joyful, cinematic love-stories.

And every time I flitted over to the Lumina website and watched a teaser of their work, IT MADE ME CRY!

I don't know the brides or grooms featured in any of Shane and Richelle's work, but apparently it doesn't matter if the film is created by skillful cinematographers who share a love of weddings...

..sniff.

So anyway, Richelle and Shane wanted me to write a communication for them that outlined the different packages offered by Lumina Motion Pictures. Along with this we also needed to get the message across to brides and grooms-to-be that Lumina does weddings like no other videographer can. Have I mentioned the whole crying thing yet??

BUG BITS - Polka Dot Bride

I am quite a curious person, so you can imagine the effect it had on me when I took on a writing project for an anonymous blogger! The deliciously elusive Ms Polka Dot recently asked me to give her a hand while she worked through the super-exciting task of revamping her blog, Polka Dot Bride.

We worked on a range of different writing projects, one of which was an email to her advertisers to introduce the new look Polka Dot Bride. The vast new site has SO much to offer anyone interested in weddings. The key for this project was to outline all of the necessary information in a way that a) made sense, b) was easy to read, and c) didn't completely bamboozle the reader.

Grammar on the Porch #9

When the porch is ravaged by wind and rain for weeks on end, Grammar doesn't visit much. It's been awhile, but with just a hint of spring in the air Grammar thought she ought to pop in for a quick cup of tea and a chat.

There are numerous words in the English language that sound the same as each other in speech, but have their own unique spelling. These words are used with ease when talking, but often bring our writing to an abrupt halt as we puzzle over which is the correct spelling for our particular purpose.

Grammar is going to set the record straight on a couple of these words this afternoon, while we wait for our English Breakfast to draw...

Practice vs. Practise

Which spelling is correct? Which word do we use when? You mean there is more than one spelling???

If you've ever stumbled over 'practice' and 'practise', I have the simplest of solutions. You will never mix up these two little lovelies again! So here it is:

Practice is a noun, a thing. Something you can put 'the' in front of. E.G. I have an appointment at the medical practice in 20 minutes.

Practise is a verb, an action. A doing word. E.G. If I am ever going to get faster at knitting I need to practise.

So how can we remember which practice is which? Easy!

'ICE' is a cold slippery thing, whereas 'ISE' is not a thing.
So, just remember that practice is a thing and practise is a doing word:

"The only thing Grammar doesn't like about bowls practice is practising her drive."

Special bonus extra from Grammar: Another similar confusion is advice and advise. Fortunately, the same rules apply.

Now then, that breeze is going right through me out here on the porch. Grammar's going to nip inside with an Iced Vo-Vo and a nice brew.

Imagine my luck when I was asked to write about the softest, fluffiest, prettiest little tutu's around? When Jaki from Little Moos asked me to write a press release for the latest collection of Little Moos tutu's I really didn't know where to start. That lasted for about 0.317 seconds, because tutus are so spectacularly fun, and they're just SO pretty, pretty pretty!

5 Questions @ The Letterbug: Carla Hazzard - Habitat baby

As a copywriter/wife/mum/sister/daughter/friend, I get asked a lot of questions. My two gorgeous Hatchlings are aged 2 and 4 years old, so asking questions is one of their favourite hobbies. So from time to time I like to hurl a few questions around too, just to even the score a little bit!

A few wintery weeks ago I launched 5 super-tricky questions at the lovely Carla Hazzard from Habitat Baby. She swiftly fired her responses straight back at me.

We both took a breath.

And then we went back to whatever it was we were doing before these 5 Questions @ The Letterbug ever happened. Take a look:

1. What is your favourite thing about winter?

Unwinding with a glass of red in front of the fire, not that I need any excuse for the red (maybe the fire though!).

2. Do your Habitat Baby activities change during the cold months or does business remain fairly consistent throughout the year?

Fairly consistent throughout the year. Having said that November/December are a little busier. Not sure if that has something to do with people wanting to redecorate their rooms for Christmas visitors?

3. Do you have a favourite Habitat Baby product that you can't stop talking about at the moment? Which one and why?

I am incredibly passionate and proud of everything in my two new ranges! But if I had to single out one item, I would have to say the Geo handmade wool rug....its soooo stylish (if I say so myself!).

4. What was the most useful piece of business advice you received when you were setting up Habitat Baby?

It seems really obvious, but do something that you are passionate about. Being really passionate about your products will keep you motivated. Also, I think it is really important to find someone who is business minded that you can bounce ideas off, vent and get support. I have a wonderful friend that I tend to annoy with my ideas, but its nice to get a neutral opinion before you launch with half baked ideas!

5. In a perfect world, would you deal with winter by:

a. escaping to a warm, tropical destintation?
b. Whipping on your ugg boots and snuggling up with a hot chocolate in front of the fire?
c. Launching yourself off a steep snowy inclines with all the other snow bunnies?
d. None of the above, instead I would....?

Definitely C - not sure of the steep inclines though as my skiing is a little rusty! My husband and I are taking the three kids to Canada for Christmas 2012 so I'm busily arranging that at the moment. Can't wait!!

BUG BITS - Little Elk

I'm back!

Like the builder who never manages to do any work to his own house, I have recently been a very naughty and neglectful little Letterbug when it comes to this blog. The good news is that I have been a busy bee on all sorts of interesting writing projects for lots of lovely clients. And now I'm going to get back to telling you about them...

Not so long ago I crossed paths with an exciting new online business called Little Elk. Sally from Little Elk is set to share beautiful, timeless treasures that she has sourced from all over the world. The first of her wonderful discoveries is a range of super-cool kid's gumboots - a highly necessary wardrobe item in Melbourne this winter!!

Sally asked me to write an introductory press release for Little Elk. Here's what we put together:

The joy of working with Sally was her clear vision for Little Elk. Many business owners struggle to define their business. What do they stand for? Who are they targeting? Why are they even in business? Hopefully these sound like pretty straight forward questions to you if you are already in business. But if they don't, it might be time to put your thinking cap on.

Clear business focus cannot be underestimated. I love helping clients to get some 20:20 vision on their business, and I also love working with clients (like Sally) whose vision is already crystal clear.

It is busy, busy, busy in The Letterbug's office at the moment. And just like the builder whose house is the last to get finished, my blog is the last to get written when I am booked up with copywriting projects.

But that's okay, because when I need a little pick-me-up I find something like this to share. I remember this clip from my childhood, and now I like to exchange "Ladybug" for "Letterbug" so that the song is all about me!!

BUG BITS - Little Bird Photography

It's a break from tradition, but I had to show the finished article for this press release, written recently for the beautiful Pru at Little Bird Photography. I don't always get to see where my words end up - the 'finished product' if you like. So when I am lucky enough to see this kind of thing, well, it kind of takes my breath away.

Once the words were on paper, I whisked the finished copy off to Prue from Gigi & Lulu, who has (once again) worked her graphic design magic here:

This is a reminder: Take some time here and there to appreciate what you've achieved. It's great to look ahead to the next goal - the next mountain you want to climb. But once you've reached the summit, take a minute to admire the view before you start abseiling, hang-gliding or bungy jumping off the other side!!

BUG BITS - Splendid Days

When Union Jack and I got married, our reception was held in a cosy, sparkly, ever-so-slightly-sloping marquee in my big sister's garden. I love nature far more than formality, and I had too many overseas guests staying in my house to start sweating the small stuff - so to me it was perfect.

Ever since that warm February evening six and a half years ago, I have had a soft spot for marquee weddings. The atmosphere in a marquee has an intangible quality that I simply love. So what a truly splendid time I have had recently, when I was lucky enough to work with Grainne Bartholemew, co-founder of the most beautiful luxury marquee hire company ever to come my way - Splendid Days.

There were a number of elements to this project, including proof-reading and editing web copy, writing a press release, editing a sales brochure and writing a promotional email for prospective venue suppliers.

Stop!

First impressions count! When communicating with clients (existing or potential), give yourself every chance of success by allowing time to consider your email messages in the same way as you would the documents attached.

Read what you have written OUT LOUD before you hit the 'Send' button. You'll be amazed how many errors you can pick up this way.

BUG BITS - Little Bird Photography

The loveliest little bird came my way a few months back - Pru Trundle from Little Bird Photography. Yes, I know - I am desperately behind on my BUG BITS posts. Suddenly I am referring to months ago when it should really be weeks, or even days between BUG BITS. What can I say? My client's projects always come before mine, and my to-do list has been pretty impressive of late!

Aaaanyway, along with Prue from Gigi and Lulu, we updated and refreshed the Little Bird Photography Session Guide.

With a client as delicate and gentle as she is cheeky and full of fun, the copy needed to strike just right balance. I love working with clients that have a very clear sense of who they are, and this was most definitely one of those projects.

Providing information and/or giving instructions really doesn't have to be dull and unappetising. With some imagination it is possible to bring light to a subject - a sense of fun amongst the facts, humour and even playfulness!

Finding an angle for your promotion

For as far as I can remember, Old Spice was a stinky old man's aftershave. That was until I stumbled across their latest series of advertisements earlier this year. Here is the latest instalment.

I don't know about you, but I'm not thinking about stinky old men's aftershave after watching that!

It just goes to show the impact that finding a new angle for your product can have on its success. Be creative. Think beyond the obvious. Accept no limitations!!

A very special friend of mine has a new baby. No, not the kind that kind of baby! This baby is a bright shiny new business that she has been working hard to create over recent months.

And it is awesome!

P for Printables is a website that sells beautiful, printable pictures that you can download, stick into a frame and hang on your wall.

Or you could use the picture for a birthday invitation.
Or wrapping paper.
Or to make a card.
Or you could laminate it and use it as a kid's placemat. (My Hatchlings just luuurve their personalised placemats. And when they get a bit 'tired' we just make new placemats with a different theme!)

The possibilities are endless for these gorgeous printables, and I just know that P for Printables is destined for big things.

Are you a Mumpreneur?

I wrote the following post back in August 2009, and given my recent nomination for the 2010 Ausmumpreneur Awards (Best Blog category) I thought it was worth reposting - just in case you missed it the first time. If you are a fan of The Letterbug maybe you'd like to vote for me too! I mean, if you're not busy or anything - you know, it might be cool. I never won that many prizes as a wee thing... Now is my chance to make up for that. It's no big deal. Really. Okay? But just vote so I can pretend not to care for a bit longer!! UPDATE: No need to vote!! An encouraging message is always welcome by way of a blog comment though (hint hint).

I love working with mumpreneurs - love it! Why? Because I get it, I know where mumpreneurs are at. I am right there with them, juggling two pre-school boys, a husband, job, laundry pile and so on.

I cannot overstate the importance of connecting with the people we choose to work with in business. As a copywriter, this connection enables me to truly collaborate with my clients on their copy projects. Our connection means I can't help but keep working until we are both deliriously happy with the final product.

Being a mum of two little people it seems that the connection with other mums in business is almost automatic, instinctive perhaps.

It takes effort, stamina, commitment and vision to be a mumpreneur, and if that is you right now I salute you. You go girl!

Now please excuse me while I go and extract the lego blocks I just watched Hatchling No.2 post into our sub-woofer speaker!

Grammar on the Porch #8

It may be tempting to avoid the whole puzzle of when to use 'I' and when to use 'me' by simply using 'myself' instead.

E.G. "Please send a menu of your finest cakes and pastries to Grandpa and myself."

Be strong - don't give in to this particular temptation! Grammar's advice is to save your "giving-in-to-temptations" for chocolate, fine wine and custard creams. The sentence written above is grammatically incorrect and can be as bad (if not worse) than getting your 'I's and 'Me's mixed up.

Incorrect: I'll send a menu of our finest cakes and pastries to Grammar and yourself.

Correct: I'll send a menu of our finest cakes and pastries to you and Grammar.

You can use 'myself' and 'yourself' correctly in only two situations:

1. To create emphasis or contrast.

"Grandpa likes lardy cakes for afternoon tea, but I myself prefer a cream bun."

2. When you are doing something to yourself

"I ask myself, why stop at one cream bun when you can eat three?"

"You're making it hard for yourself by using that wobbly old cup and saucer."

So there you have it, another piece in the never-ending puzzle that is "Grammar on the Porch". And it is so brisk out here this afternoon that I think I'll have a piece of warm apple strudel with my cup of tea - mmmmmm.

BUG BITS - Chic Party Boutique

I love birthday parties, I can't help it. For my 26th birthday I had a fairy party simply because I never had one as a child. And I believe every girl should have a fairy party in her lifetime!

You can imagine then, how excited I was when the delightful Nicky from Chic Party Boutique contacted me in search of help with her web copy.

Nicky had come to the fairly common realisation that while we often know what we're trying to say, sometimes it can be really difficult to get the message across clearly. This is especially true when trying to write about our own business - our 'baby' - the thing that we live and breathe every single day. It really shouldn't be so hard, but gee, often it is the HARDEST thing to write about!

So, the brief from Nicky was to write some fun, relaxed and informative copy that was inviting, concise and easy to follow. We worked on copy for her home page, product descriptions, category descriptions and 'About Us' page.

Simply because writing 'About Us' pages is one of my favourite things, here is a snip of what I put together for Chic Party Boutique's 'About Us':

The Letterbug in the Press

If there's one thing I love doing, it is helping other women succeed in business. Hooray for the Mumpreneurs of the world!!

As you can imagine, I was thrilled to be interviewed by our local newspaper (The Manningham Leader) last week about the Manningham Women's Business Network. As a member of this network I get to meet a wonderful group of local businesswomen every month. We take a couple of hours to network over coffee, share our insights and expertise, and learn from a variety of guest speakers.

I have to admit, the offer of a couple of kid-free hours at the start of every month is a pretty big draw card too!

I've agonised for a couple of days over whether to draw attention to The Letterbug's first appearance in The Leader. Dot and I are not ones to brag - really. This morning I put on my brave trousers and decided to go for it - so here's the article (and photo) in all its glory:

'Me' vs. 'I'?

Good afternoon dears, it's lovely to see you again. Today I'm going to tell you about me...

I...

Me...

Here is the point: Do you ever stumble when it comes to writing (or talking) about yourself in a way that is grammatically correct? Let's set the record straight on the use of "me" versus "I" once and for all.

As a child I was often scolded for referring to "Me and Mummy", or "Me and Billy". My mother would remind me, "It is 'Mummy and I', not 'Me and Mummy' dear." So successful was my mother at teaching me this, that I came to believe that "I" was almost always a better option than "me" if ever I was unsure.

The truth is that each of these delightful little pronouns has their rightful place in the English language. Let Grammar show you...

INCORRECT: Please deliver an extra large jar of strawberry conserve to Grandpa and I.

CORRECT: Please deliver an extra large jar of strawberry conserve to Grandpa and me.

How do you check whether your sentence is correct? EASY!

Simply remove the other person or people in the sentence and read it again. The answer should be clear.

Please deliver an extra large jar of strawberry conserve to [remove "Grandpa and"] I.

INCORRECT: Please deliver an extra large jar of strawberry conserve to I.

CORRECT: Please deliver an extra large jar of strawberry conserve to me.

And there you have it dears, another of life's grammatical stumbling blocks cleared up in a matter of minutes. Now speaking of strawberry conserve, does anyone else have a hankering for a lovely Devonshire tea.

The Letterbug and The Butterfly Ball

Yesterday I fulfilled a childhood dream. It sounds like a grand statement, but as grand as it sounds, it is absolutely true!

Nothing filled my preschool heart with joy more than catching the following clip every now and then in between Sesame Street and Playschool on ABC television. For anyone who was a young whipper snapper back in the late 70's and early 80's, I hope you enjoy reliving the magic of The Butterfly Ball!!

There are so many parts of this clip that I loved as a child (and still love now). The frogs shiny black eyes, the badger (dressed as a stork) marching with dead-straight stilt legs, and the fireflies dancing at the very end are just a few highlights for me.

I know it's drawing a long bow, but I figured I could get away with posting The Butterfly Ball here - me being The Letterbug and all. I think I've just found my Letterbug theme song...

As the chilly weather takes over Melbourne it is hard to imagine we will ever have a need for swimwear again. But with only five weeks until the shortest day of the year, I'm confident we'll be charging headlong towards another scorching Australian summer before we know it.

Good afternoon dears. Grammar is so pleased to back on the porch with you today! There is always so much for us to chat about when I visit, isn't it lovely? And chatting (i.e. the spoken word) is exactly the topic that Grammar wants to cover today. Then when we're done, there's jam roly-poly and more Earl Grey for everyone!

Although this may not technically be a Grammar issue, I have noticed a few words being used in all the wrong places during conversation recently. And the mis-use of these words is becoming more and more common.

Don't fall into the trap! Let Grammar set the record straight for you today.

Why does it matter?

Well, it seems that our verbal language swiftly flows into informal written communications (emails, social media etc.)

So?

So, Grammar wants you to avoid looking like anything less than the bright little sparks that you all are...

Irregardless vs Regardless/Irrespective

This word alone was Grammar's motivation for bringing up today's topic.

Ladies and Gents, 'irregardless' isn't really a word!

The word many folks are searching for could be either 'regardless' or 'irrespective'.

Regardless adj. - heedless. --adv. - in spite of everything.

Irrespective of prep. - without taking account of.

If you're an old eavesdropper like me, you'll be surprised how often you hear people say 'irregardless' in conversation. You'll see!

Typical vs Atypical

Grammar recently attended a workshop that explored the typical behaviour of Poker players around the world. (Useful information to have when you want to conker the local Elderly Citizens Bridge Club!)

Sadly, the presenter continually used the word 'atypical' in all the places where 'typical' ought to have been used. Grammar didn't learn half of what she could have learned, had she not been distracted by the whole typical/atypical matter.

Ladies and Gents, 'atypical' means the opposite to 'typical'!

Typical adj. true to type, characteristic.

Atypical adj. not typical.

Let's make it our mission to eradicate these two linguistic blunders from conversations everywhere! And while we're at it shall we lobby for an additional public holiday to celebrate the indescribable deliciousness of jam roly-poly?

I vote YES - seconds anyone?

BUG BITS - Modern Little Munchkins

Newsletters! Newsletters! Newsletters!

Confession One: I don't have enough time in the day to swing past all of my favourite websites and blogs, even though I'd dearly love to. It makes me sad, but until an extra 3 hours are added to the usual 24 each day it is something I just have to live with.

For me, the next best thing is for my favourite sites to email a newsletter that lets me know what I'm missing out on. If I suddenly turn a sickly shade of green from envy I click immediately on the website link. (I'm the baby of the family - I hate missing out on anything!) Even if I don't turn green, I'm still happy to be kept in the loop during my website absence. Reading newsletters is easy!

Confession Two: The Letterbug also loves writing newsletters. Short, punchy prose that gets straight to the point, what's not to like?

This week was no exception, as I completed the first newsletter for gorgeous Louisa at Modern Little Munchkins. With winter at our doorstep, the brief was to showcase winter fashion from new labels at Modern Little Munchkins, and write up Louisa's two feature products for the April newsletter.

I recently hurled a series of questions straight at Amelia Singh, the smiling face behind Bambooty. My arm was strong and my aim was straight - it was all in the name of:

In traditional style, my questions were tough. These were hard hitting, thought provoking, tricky-dicky questions. Amelia stepped up to the plate with confidence, and I am pleased to say she batted every question out of the park.

Here is what happened:

1. What is your favourite: dark, white or milk chocolate?

Dark chocolate is an essential ingredient of any balanced diet, no?

2. What are you and the family doing this Easter break?

Spending it with extended family from all over the globe who are in town for my sister's wedding. It's going to be one of my best ever.

3. What have you learnt from your children that helps you with Bambooty?

There are more important things than nappies and try to remain calm at all times.

4. What advice would you offer an aspiring business owner based on your experience of establishing Bambooty?

Everything takes longer than you expect and often costs more than you expect too.

5. At Easter time, do you:

BUG BITS - Victorian Touch Football Association

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

The Letterbug recently metamorphosed into a "Sports Reporter" when I completed a project for Touch Football Victoria. I wrote an article about their upcoming appearance at the National Touch League competition - a major event in Australia's Touch Football calendar.

With next to no knowledge of the game, I was fortunate to be guided by Touch Football Victoria's Regional Manager, Michael Lovett. What a hard working and extremely patient creature he is! Some input from the team coaches guided me along the way, and the job was completed in a jiffy. (This is always a bonus when there is a deadline - and it's tight!)

Special Delivery: Love Paper Scissors

When a large parcel arrives on my doorstep it is no ordinary day. So when an especially large parcel arrived last week with my name on it I was VERY excited.

I leapt to my feet when the doorbell rang, threw open the door, gave the postman a wave and a cheesy grin, then slipped inside to investigate. With my trusty scissors I carefully began extracting the contents of this parcel from its packaging...

And here's what I found:

Something VERY beautiful from Chelsie at Love Paper Scissors, with a sweet sweet card to go with it.

I sat and admired her work for a loooong time, before deciding that the only place for this was my bedroom wall. So that is where I put it!

Twenty five butterflies made from Japanese chiyogami paper, hand cut and arranged in this frame to make "The Collector - Butterflies".

My bedroom has never felt more complete - thanks Chelsie!

Dot's Giggle Spot #6

Oh dear...

Had the author of this headline stepped away from his work for an hour (or ideally 24 hours), he probably would have noticed that something was up.

Perhaps time was too precious, or perhaps he was so glad to have finished his article that he was simply busting to submit it. Either way, I bet he wished he could turn back the clock once he saw the headline printed in black and white!

We have all been there - we all make mistakes. The trick is to allow yourself the best opportunity to spot any mistakes before a document leaves your hands.

Go for a walk, have a coffee, weed the garden, talk to the dog, salute the sun - it doesn't matter. Just create some space between you and your writing. You will come back to it with fresh eyes, and be able to edit so much more effectively. Amen.

BUG BITS - Cheeky Little Soles

I don't know about you, but I will go a long way to get my hands on a comfortable pair of shoes. Of course I have a few pairs of ridiculously uncomfortable but super cool cat shoes in amongst my collection, but they now collect dust most of the time. My feet recently leapt (!!) to attention, when I met and began working with the ever-sparkling Lisa Koba from Cheeky Little Soles.

Over the past few months Lisa and I have had a great time working on various Cheeky Little Soles projects, and we're both proud of the results. Whilst much of what we've been working on is yet to be launched, here is a sneaky peek at the Cheeky Little Soles winter brochure for 2010:

Those little polar boots!!! If only they came in adult sizes... I know I've never owned a pair of silver polar boots, but I'm pretty sure I'd like them a LOT!

6 tips on using apostrophes correctly

When Grammar was a young lass she loved bees – not bee’s or bees’. The reason for this was that even as a whipper snapper, Grammar knew how to use an apostrophe correctly. Over the years, however, she has seen many an unsuspecting writer use them in all the wrong places. Here are 6 tips from Grammar to help you use the apostrophe correctly.

1. Use an apostrophe to show the omission of letters in a contraction:
· I'm (I am)
· you're (you are)
· he's (he is)
· she's (she is)
· it's* (it is)
· we're (we are)
· they're (they are)
· isn't (is not)
· aren't (are not)
· can't (cannot)
· don't (do not)
· who's (who is)
· won't (will not)
Grammar’s top tip: Be careful to place the apostrophe where the letter or letters have been omitted, which is not always the same place where the two words have been joined.
* See Grammar’s earlier post about “Its vs It’s for more info on this tricky little aberration.

2. Use an apostrophe with -s for possessives of singular nouns
Use an apostrophe plus -s to show the possessive form of a singular noun, even if that singular noun already ends in -s:
· Arthur's hearing aid
· my daughter's lovely teacake
· Banjo Patterson's poetry
· Rob Thomas's sexy voice
· today's horoscope
· the boss's office
· Bridget Jones's diary
· David Beckham's hot bod

3. Use an apostrophe without -s for possessives of most plural nouns:
To form the possessive of a plural noun that already ends in -s, add an apostrophe:
· the girls' horses(the horses belonging to the girls)
· the witches' cauldrons(the cauldrons belonging to the witches)
· the Johnsons' garden gnomes (the garden gnomes belonging to the Johnsons)

If the plural noun does not end in -s, add an apostrophe plus -s:
· the women's toilets(the toilets belonging to the women)
· the children's toys (the toys belonging to the children)
· the men's golf day (the golf day belonging to the men)

4. Use an apostrophe with -s when two or more nouns possess the same thing:
When two or more nouns possess the same thing, add an apostrophe plus -s to the last noun listed:
· Ben and Jerry's Choc Chip Ice Cream
· Grammar and Grandpa’s front porch (Grammar and Grandpa share the same front porch)

When two or more nouns separately possess something, add an apostrophe to each noun listed:
· Daisy's and Ivy's iPods (Each girl has her own iPod.)
· Gerald’s and Henry’s motorcycles (Each man has his own motorcycle.)

5. Do Not Use an Apostrophe with Possessive Pronouns:
Possessive pronouns already show ownership, it's* not necessary to add an apostrophe:
· yours
· his
· hers
· its*
· ours
· theirs

However, we do add an apostrophe plus -s to form the possessive of some indefinite pronouns:
· anybody's game
· one's own ability
· somebody's luggage

6. In general, do not use an apostrophe to Form a plural:
As a general rule, use only an -s (or an -es) without an apostrophe to form the plurals of nouns--including dates, acronyms, and family names:
· Financial Markets plummeted in early 2009.
· The insights offered by Grammars everywhere make them very important people indeed.
· The Walters have sold all of their CDs on Ebay.

To avoid confusion, we may occasionally need to use apostrophes to indicate the plural forms of certain letters and expressions that are not commonly found in the plural:
· Mind your p's and q's.
· Let's accept the offer without any if's, but’s, or maybe’s.

Well then, who knew that one little punctuation mark would require so much consideration?! Grammar has faith that you will treat our little friend the apostrophe with great care from now on though.

And did I hear somebody say "Apple Turnovers for afternoon tea"? Gracious, I hope so!

5 Questions @ The Letterbug: Lisa Koba - Cheeky Little Soles

I recently launched a set of testing, challenging, thought provoking questions to another of my wonderful clients. Lisa is the ever-so-sweet founder of Cheeky Little Soles, the most beautiful range of babies/toddlers footwear to ever pitter patter around on Planet Earth.

In the blink of an eye Lisa had conquered her "5 Questions @ The Letterbug". Here's what happened...

1. What is his name at your house – Father Christmas or Santa Claus?

He is Santa in our house, but my 2 year old pronunces it ‘Fanta’.

2. Do your kids get involved with Cheeky Little Soles? How?

Yes my 5 year old likes to help me in the warehouse. Some days she likes to fold the packaging in preparation of incoming orders. I said to her one day. “Lily would you like to work with mummy in Cheeky Little Soles when you grow up?” Her reply was “Sorry mummy I can’t I am going to be a fairy!” Out of the mouths of babes!

3. Imagine a perfectly quiet evening with nothing to do but please yourself - what would you do?

Ahhhh, those are a rare occurrence in our house! But I would like to sit on the couch with a glass of red wine and watch something on TV like The Gilmore Girls or Sex in the City re-runs. Or if I felt the need to escape the house I would bribe someone to look after my kids and whisk my gorgeous husband out for a lovely romantic dinner for two.

4. What philosophy have you adopted for Cheeky Little Soles that also applies to everyday life?

Work smarter not harder. I apply that in all aspects of my business, but also in my personal life ie make sure you do a weeks (or two) shopping in one hit (I am the queen of lists), grab a washing basket and pick up all the kids toys at the end of the day and put them all back in their place. I am a busy woman (like all mums in business) and don’t have time to ‘fluff’ as I call it or waste time.

5. Complete the sentence: All I want for Christmas is…..

LOL ‘no fighting at home’ (the kids that is!).

I would like to wish all of the friends, clients and supporters of The Letterbug a very merry Christmas. What a wonderful year The Letterbug has enjoyed in 2009!

It's easy to get caught up in life and forget all of the things we can be thankful for, but Christmas often provides us the space we need for some reflection. I know I have been blessed by the opportunity write for so many amazing people this year, and help them create a buzz around their businesses. I look forward to doing so much more in 2010!

I will be taking a short break over Christmas to spend time with friends and family (and Dot of course!), but will be back and raring to go from Monday 11th January, 2010.

5 Questions @ The Letterbug: Mel Quick - Green Goat

Hi there!

While gazing out of my office window the other day (searching for inspiration??), I had a bright idea! Let's throw some crazy questions at my clients and see what they can come up with in response.

Mel Quick from Green Goat has a good sense of fun and adventure, so she most nobly agreed to be the first to tackle "5 Questions @ The Letterbug". Here's what happened...

1. If you had a theme song, what would it be?

Wow, straight up you have given me a tough one! Having recently taken my sister to the Pink concert I was leaning towards one of her songs, I admire her for her strength and independence. However, one of the things that I put a great deal of emphasis on in operating my business is customer service. I am not one of the “big guys” and I like the fact that personal contact with each of my customers. Also having my own children I can relate to my customers and give them my own honest opinion on what products work and what doesn’t. Therefore, I am going to go with “We are family” by Sister Sledge, it has a catchy vibe and I am sure could be turned into a funky Green Goat jingle.

2. Chocolate milkshake or iced green tea?
Is this even a question? Of course chocolate milkshake!

3. What mantra do you repeat to get yourself through a bad day?

I am quite an easygoing person, so it takes quite a lot to rattle me. I just try not to sweat the small stuff, in the end it only takes up valuable energy that I could be putting into something worthwhile.

4. Sam or Greg for Yellow Wiggle?

I am sitting on the fence here, they are both excellent entertainers and are obviously very committed to their job, I often wonder when they see their own families. I really felt for Greg and his sudden departure from the Wiggles, going to shows and looking back at DVDs it was clear that he really loved his job, and I always believe if you love what you do you will be successful at it. I have taken my daughter to a concert with Sam and she thoroughly enjoyed it, admittedly she was quite young but she didn’t even notice that Greg wasn’t there (sorry Greg).

5. If you were stranded on a desert island and could take only one thing from Green Goat, what would it be?

Ahh, that sounds nice.... sorry I drifted off on the 'being stranded on an island' bit, back to the question at hand. A Cocoon Bean Bag would be really good for lounging around in, a Seedling Outdoor Explorer Set would also be great to check out all the critters and a Sparkle T Cupcakes Puzzle to keep my mind occupied. I know you only said one thing, but it is too hard - I love all the things that I stock!

6 ways to get your writing humming

While its nice to have a lovely Letterbug to write copy for you, from time to time there's a good chance that you will either want to, or have to do some writing of your own.

Don't panic! If you take the following 6 things into account next time you sit down to write, I guarantee you will get a better result.

Here we go:

1. If you are writing about yourself or your business, its not just what you do that matters, it is why you do it better than the rest that sets you apart from the mob - so spell it out!

2. First impressions count - the electronic age means we're now more impatient than ever. You need to grab your reader's attention within the first few seconds by using some well chosen words to engage the reader.

3. Write the same way as you would talk. Techno jargon, biospeak etc. limits your ability to communicate and connect with readers. Personality on the other hand draws readers in. Its a bit like the Apple adverts with stiff, suit-wearing PC and cool, easy-going Mac.

4. Who are you writing for? You always need a target reader in mind. When writing, imagine you are talking to one potential customer. What would you say to them?

5. Stand out from the crowd and don't copy your competitors. It is far better to be fresh, unique and original.

6. Ditch any techo industry speak and use words that sell instead. As an expert in your field you might know what you mean, but chances are your readers may not.

So there you have it - 6 ways to get your writing humming a pretty tune. Remember them when you are next required to write something (anything!), and just go for it. You might really impress yourself! And if all else fails - you know where to find The Letterbug!!

Grammar on the porch #3

It's vs. Its

Grammar loves to make you to look like clever young things every time you write. Today she wants to remind you that sometimes our use of seemingly harmless little words can be like sour milk in your Earl Grey to your writing. So, let's ensure we are using these two correctly!

Many people trip over the use of it's vs. its - so let Grammar explain it for you.

"It's" is a contraction of “it is” or “it has”.

- It's time for a Nanna-nap.

- It's a long way to the top, if you want to rock and roll!

"Its" is a possessive pronoun.

- This lamington has lost its coconut.

- My cat walks with its head (and tail) held high.

The confusion between it's and its occurs because on just about every other word, 's indicates possession. So we naturally want to use it's to mean "something belonging to it." But don't be tricked! It's is only used when it's a contraction of it is or it has.

Grammar's money-back guaranteed rule - if you can replace the word with "it is" or "it has," use it's. Otherwise, it's always its.

Now then, it's rather sunny on the porch this afternoon, and the sun is kicking out its summer-strength rays. Don't forget to slip, slop, slap dears....

Dot's Giggle Spot #4

Dot likes a good laugh, as do most people in this world. It is something worth remembering when trying to come up with a new catch phrase, headline, or in this case - business name.

I think its hard not to at least smile, but then with two young boys I am often reduced to this kind of humour...

While it might be a little too much for some, I think this picture illustrates the point that a little bit of humour can go a looooonng way.

BUG BITS - Bambooty

One of the things I love about my job is that I am always learning. In writing about my client's businesses and products I am exposed to all sorts of cool things that would otherwise escape me.

The following project was no exception, although sadly I may have done well to learn about modern cloth nappies about four years ago, when Hatchling No.1 was born. Sigh...

Well, there's no point dwelling on 'what if's, so instead I would love to show you the Easy Nappies flyer I wrote for the gorgeous Amelia at Bambooty. The brief was to create a set of care instructions that were light-hearted and fun, but got the message across clearly.

Here's the result:

And the inside two pages of the flyer, once prettied up by Amelia's clever graphic designer, looked like this:

There was a rather tight deadline to meet on this project in order to have the flyers ready for a special Bambooty event in September. It was so satisfying to knock that deadline out of the park with a big "Woo Woo!!"

5 things this copywriter won't do...

Its been a while since I provided an overview of what The Letterbug can do, so if you'd like to know more click here.

I also want to tell you about what The Letterbug will NOT do. Sometimes you just have to draw the line, you know? Its not so much a matter of pride as an unrelenting desire to do my best work for clients (ie. you). Oh, and if you're looking for a copywriter, this list might assist with the process!

I won't begin writing for you without a brief. Nope, sorry - no way. Now that doesn't mean you need to complete a questionnaire of epic proportions (unless you're into that kind of thing - I'm not), but a chat and a short briefing document provides an insight into your ideas and objectives for the project. Without a creative brief, how can a copywriter understand what you are trying to achieve?

I won't be silent throughout the project, relying solely on absurdly long questionnaires as a substitute for talking things through. Hey, as the baby of my family - talking is almost as important to me as breathing. What can I say, I am a communicator!

I won't do it my way - flexibility is everything. If your deadline is 7 days, then its 7 days. If you like email more than the phone - no problem! Inflexibility often amounts to a lack of empathy, which will limit a copywriter's connection with you and your target audience.

I won't go AWOL. Its all about communication people! Your copywriter should be easy to reach and attentive to your emails and voicemails, responding promptly. Settling for anything less can lead you down the path of serious frustration.

I won't work for you if I fail the ultimate test. Could you imagine hanging out with your copywriter over a beer/chardonnay/cosmopolitan/decaf soy latte?

So there you have it - 5 things The Letterbug won't do.

Collaboration is the key to successful marketing communications. Interaction between you and the copywriter should feel easy, with the writer asking relevant questions and taking care to understand your vision for the project. If you don't connect with one another, this could be tricky.

If you're considering a writer who WILL do any of the five things I have discussed, it might be best continue your search a little longer. You owe it to yourself. Finding the right copywriter will make the world of difference to your project. It will be the start of a great relationship and a sure fire way of getting a result you're happy with.

BUG BITS - Green Goat

Its not every day a green goat comes into your life, but that is exactly what happened to me only a few short weeks ago. I met the fun and lovely Mel Quick, founder of gorgeous online children's boutique - Green Goat!

One of Green Goat's stand out items is a range of simple, traditional toys that inspire creativity and also happen to be great fun to play with. As August/September is the time when many publications are putting together their Christmas edition (eek!) we wanted to highlight the joy of traditional toys, with a flavour of the festive season:

Grammar on the Porch #2

Now then dears, it seems to be that some folks get mixed up when it comes to that vs which. Using these words in some circumstances is straight forward and needs no explanation, but in other circumstances it can be ever so confusing. Let me sort it out for you dear.

RULE #1

That introduces essential clauses while which introduces nonessential clauses.

EXAMPLES:

I do not trust aerobics classes that claim "Suitable for all ages" because they are often most unsuitable for Grammar (89 years old).

We would not know which aerobics classes were being discussed without the that clause.

The aerobics class claiming "suitable for all ages," which appeared in the local newspaper, is on today.

The product is already identified. Therefore, which begins a nonessential clause.

NOTE:
Essential clauses do not have commas surrounding them while nonessential clauses are surrounded by commas.

RULE #2

If this, that, these, or those has already introduced an essential clause, you may use which to introduce the next clause, whether it is essential or nonessential.

EXAMPLES:

That is a moment which you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Those potatoes, which we've boiled already, do not need to be roasted quite as long.

NOTE:
Often, you can streamline your sentence by leaving out which.

EXAMPLE:

That is a moment which you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Better:

That is a moment you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Oooh, now doesn't all that talk about words make you thirsty? I fancy an Earl Grey with just a drop of milk thank you dear. No, no sugar - its the ruin of all the great leaf beverages you know. But that's another story....

BUG BITS - Healed

Are you a Mumpreneur?

I love working with mumpreneurs - love it! Why? Because I get it, I know where mumpreneurs are at. I am right there with them, juggling two pre-school boys, a husband, job, laundry pile and so on.

I cannot overstate the importance of connecting with the people we choose to work with in business. As a copywriter, this connection enables me to truly collaborate with my clients on their copy projects. Our connection means I can't help but keep working until we are both deliriously happy with the final product.

Being a mum of two little people it seems that the connection with other mums in business is almost automatic, instinctive perhaps.

It takes effort, stamina, commitment and vision to be a mumpreneur, and if that is you right now I salute you. You go girl!

Now please excuse me while I go and extract the lego blocks I just watched Hatchling No.2 post into our sub-woofer speaker!

There, Their, They're

"Now then dears, at first glance it seems so simple - and it is! But these three words trip up many an unsuspecting writer. That is because these words are homonyms - words that sound alike but have different meanings. Have a wee peek at the the following examples and you'll be set like a jelly on the there/their/they're matter..."

There
- denotes a place, and means in, at, or to that place.

I will pop my tea cosy over there.
Could you please leave my knitting in there?
There is nowhere like Grammar's house.

Their
- is a determiner belonging to them, a possessive pronoun.

Will you get a ride in their car?
I want to play in their bowls team.
Their sponge cake was the best.

They're
- the contraction of they are. If you can replace "they're" with "they are" then you know you have used the correct homnym

They're going to the movies tomorrow.
I wonder what they're going to do afterwards?
They said they're going out for hot chocolate.

"Its as easy as that dears. Now be a sweetie and pass me another slice of vanilla sponge cake... I'd get it myself only my hip plays up in this weather. You know.... "

Passion, man - yeah!

Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to a local business women's network, where I met a wonderful bunch of local businesswomen, and listened to an interesting presentation by their guest speaker, Charles Kovess.

Charles spoke about finding your passion - he outlined why it is important, how it can change our lives, ways to reveal your passion. He also shared some funny 'by the ways', which made the session fun.

I like listening to motivational speakers. There is always something to take from what they have to say - even if you don't buy into the whole lot. The running theme throughout Charles' work is 'passion', and it is true that life really does shift to another level when we're passionate about something.

Last night Charles raffled off a place at his one day Passion for Work and Life program (normally $795), which sadly I didn't win - booo!!

Nevertheless, today I will be approaching things with "passion, man" - look out!

Dot the Ladybird likes to have a giggle from time to time, and nothing makes her laugh more than funny signs from all around the world.

Much like Dot, I also like to have a giggle at this kind of thing - check out this sign...

Hee hee (snort!) - I love it!

However, this sign does highlight the importance of proof reading our writing from an unsuspecting reader's point of view. Its worth making sure that our message is clear and not at risk of being misunderstood! Well, not unless that is your intention.

Introducing Dot

Have I mentioned yet that decision making is not one of my strong suits? Well, its not.

For this reason the lovely ladybird in my logo has remained nameless for quite some time. Despite the loyalty and dedication she has displayed, she has no title, no given name, no surname. Shocking, I know.

Well, this beautiful bug has languished in anonymity for long enough. She now has a name - yes!

I am proud to introduce you to Dot.

The name Dot seemed appropriate on a number of levels, not the least of which is a family connection. Dot is my last remaining grandmother's name, and as a child I thought her name was, um... weird! It was a looong time before I realised Dot was short for Dorothy. My Grandmother is NOT a Dorothy, of that much I am sure. She is just Dot.

My Grandmother in her hey day was strong, fit, bright, and very practical. If she had any marbles left to rub together I think she'd be mostly disapproving of me honouring her name in a ladybird. But since her marbles left her quite some time ago I think she's now likely to be quite pleased!!

Dot the Ladybird has landed.

BUG BITS - Cloth Poppy

I recently had the pleasure of working on a press release for Leesa Cowan at the lovely Cloth Poppy. Leesa's country roots made the perfect backdrop for a piece about her beautiful, whimsical range of children's clothing.

I love Cloth Poppy's style and would happily fill my kid's wardrobes with Leesa's beautiful 'tea party skirts' - except that I have two boys and I am pretty sure they wouldn't dig them as much as I do. Sigh...

...and the list goes on!

Essentially, regardless of the document being produced I create copy that is clear, easy to understand, flows well, and communicates the desired message.

For some projects I come up with the creative 'angle', while other times my clients have their own ideas that they want me to bring to life. I enjoy both scenarios, and ultimately each project is a collaboration between my client and me.

I plan to share my work with you where I can, so watch this space!

Hi there.

Welcome to The Letterbug.

My name is Jenny, and for the longest time I have loved writing. In fact, while The Letterbug is in its early days, I have been writing for 29 years. Eeeek! Yes, its 29 years since my prep teacher, Mrs Wild, taught me how to write and I've never looked back.

I have worked for many years in an industry where using the right words means everything. I enjoy the challenge of putting together carefully crafted copy that conveys just the right message. With a strong sales background I understand the impact using the right words can have.

Along the way I have assisted friends and colleagues with many and varied writing projects, and I have finally decided to make the leap.

The Letterbug has landed! A copywriting service, by me.

I love painting pictures with words.
I love getting the right sound, good rhythm and the right tone.
I love reading the fabulous work of other writers.

I also love watching my three year old son try to write his name.

I am the mother of two young boys, aged 1 and 3. You will come to know them as 'The Hatchlings' here at The Letterbug. I also have a wonderful husband who is currently spending plenty of quality time with the t.v while I work feverishly to launch The Letterbug.

I love my house full of boys and couldn't do any of this without them.
